Dr. Tajudeen Mobolaji Akerele, a public health lecturer, researcher and physician is the Treasurer, Eko Foundation of Lagos. He was born at the Massey Street Children’s Hospital, Lagos on 25 January 1954 and his educational pursuit spanned through the length and breadth of the state. He attended Tinubu Methodist School, Lagos for his primary education, Igbobi College, Yaba and Federal School of Science, Lagos for his secondary education between 1959 and 1975.
Bolaji enrolled for the Course of Medicine, at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos in 1975 and graduated with the MBBS Certificate in 1980. He bagged the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in September 1986 from the University of Lagos. He was admitted as a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) by examination in 1991. Dr. Akerele has a number of public health-focused publications in local and international medical journals.
Dr. Akerele worked briefly as a Medical Officer at the Maryland Medical Center, Lagos, 1982-1983. He joined the Lagos State Unified Local Government Service later in 1983 and rose from the position of Medical Officer II / Assistant Medical Officer of Health to Chief Consultant Preventive Medicine / Medical Officer of Health. He served in substantive or acting capacity in eight (8) out of the then 12 Local Governments in Lagos State between 1983 and 1997. He was at one time the Resident Advisor / Country Representative of the USAID/FHI AIDS Control and Prevention (AIDSCAP) Project in Nigeria (1992-1995).
In the quest for a “greener pasture”, Dr. Akerele travelled to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and served as a Public Health Lecturer and HOD at the College of Health Sciences, Jeddah; Primary Health Care Consultant, Ministry of Health, Riyadh; and Community Medicine Consultant at the Council of Health Ministers of the Gulf Cooperation States, Diplomatic Quarters, Riyadh between April 1997 and June 2003 respectively. He returned to the country and served as Programme Communication Consultant with UNICEF, Nigeria on Polio Eradication, Avian Influenza and HIV and AIDS respectively from February 2004 to July 2009.
Dr Akerele is a member of the Nigeria Medical Association; Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN); Society for Occupational Health Physicians of Nigeria, Epidemiological Society of Nigeria and World Federation of Associations of Public Health. He was a Member (Advisory) Technical Sub-Committee on Environmental Control and Pollution and Lagos State Universal Child Immunization Committee; member Ad-Hoc Committee on Lagos State Health Sector Review. He was a Commissioner on the Governing Board of Lagos State Health Service Commission, 2009-2015. He served as the Medical Team Leader on Hajj for the Lagos State Muslim Pilgrims, 2012-2015.
His hobbies include: reading, writing, table tennis, lawn tennis and swimming. Married with children, Dr. Bolaji Akerele is a Prince of the Akitoye-Dosunmu-Oyekan Royal House of Lagos and holds a religious title of Bashorun Adeen.
